Research in Pavillion Bosio

Research has been an integral part of the School’s vision ever since its creation. The space it occupies in the course answers to the School’s will to add a scientific aspect to its education.


Research in Pavillion Bosio is instituted in the following manners :

- Through the elaboration of Art & Scenography Research and Creation Workshops as well as partnership projects. Aimed particularly to the 4th and 5th year students, they are the foundations of artistic and theoretical investigation.

- By regularly inviting artists and theorists for conferences, lectures and workshops.

- By organising an annual colloquium, edited in the publication Pavillon.

- With the involvement of certain teachers in academic or independent research units. Their engagement takes form in daylong seminars and articles published in specialised periodicals.


- The creation of a research program :

- Built with 2011/2012 achievements regarding “the scenic device”, the program took place from 2012 to 2015. It examined the significance of an object on stage and was developed through a theoretical perspective by analysing experiments led by the project-phase and postgraduate students. This research program led to the organisation of a colloquium followed by the publication of the 5th Pavillion review titled “ Scenic Object”. How does an object intervene on stage nowadays? What function does it occupy and what aesthetic does it lead to, in these times when animate and inanimate, craft and mass production, fetishism and material denial are intertwined? These were the various questions of the research program.



- In 2015-2016, a new program was inaugurated, which will be renewed in 2016-2017. Named “Occupying an exhibition”, it will deepen and develop the research and experiments led in Pavillon Bosio during several years on exhibition formats. At odds with a classical conception of museums, the idea of occupying an exhibition translates a dynamic, temporal, lively and social vision of the relationship between an artwork and its viewer. The space, envisioned as a stage, will be activated by scenographic principles conceived through the extension of the artworks. On-site projects will be designed by including the moment of confrontation within the scenography. Their realization and opening to the public will therefore relate professionalization and experimentation.
This program will also emphasize moments of reflection through historical and theoretical perspective, by organizing lectures, colloquiums and publications.

-  Through the current programing of a collaboration with the History of Ideas Research Centre (Nice-Sophia-Antipolis Unversity). The aim of this partnership is to establish student- teacher discussions about the coupling between the notions of “art” and “scenography”. Therefore, under leadership of their teachers (Carole Talon-Hugon, Ondine Bréaud-Holland, Mathilde Roman), artists and art philosophy students will query the meanings of “genuine scenography” or “exhibition as a medium”.


The school participates, on another side, in the collective reflection upon the definition of Research, as it is currently led within the National Association of Art Schools (ANDEA).
